১৯৯৯ সালে বাঙালির ভাষা শহীদদের আত্মত্যাগের স্মৃতিকে সম্মান জানিয়ে ইউনেস্কো একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দেয়। এর ফলে বাংলাদেশের ভাষা আন্দোলন বিশ্ব ইতিহাসে মর্যাদাপূর্ণ স্থান অর্জন করে। যে বাংলা ভাষা আমাদের আন্তর্জাতিক স্বীকৃতি এনে দিয়েছে, আমরা কি সেই ভাষাকে যথার্থ সম্মান দিতে পেরেছি? 

বছরে একদিন আনুষ্ঠানিকতা পালনের মধ্যেই কি আমাদের দায়িত্ব শেষ, নাকি সারা বছর ভাষার সঠিক চর্চা ও মর্যাদা রক্ষা করা আমাদের কর্তব্য? মনে রাখা দরকার, ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি হঠাৎ করে আসেনি; অসংখ্য ত্যাগ, রক্তদান ও সংগ্রামের মধ্য দিয়ে দিনটি জাতির জীবনে যুক্ত হয়েছে। এটি কেবল ভাষা রক্ষার আন্দোলন নয়, বরং জাতিসত্তা, সংস্কৃতি ও সাহিত্যিক স্বাতন্ত্র্য রক্ষার দৃঢ় সংগ্রামের প্রতীক।

বর্তমানে লক্ষ্য করা যায়, ভাষার প্রকৃত মর্যাদা রক্ষার চেয়ে দিবস উদযাপনেই বেশি উৎসাহ দেখা যায়। সারা বছর বাংলা ভাষার শুদ্ধ ব্যবহার ও সংরক্ষণ নিয়ে তেমন উদ্যোগ না থাকলেও ফেব্রুয়ারি এলেই ব্যাপক আয়োজন শুরু হয়। শহীদ মিনার সাজানো, প্রভাতফেরি, ফুল অর্পণ, বইমেলা, আলোচনা সভা, সামাজিক যোগাযোগমাধ্যমে আবেগঘন পোস্ট সব মিলিয়ে উদযাপনই যেন মুখ্য হয়ে ওঠে।

গণমাধ্যমেও একই চিত্র দেখা যায়। বিশেষ দিবস উপলক্ষে টকশো, নাটক বা সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান প্রচার করা হলেও সারা বছর উপস্থাপনায় ইংরেজি শব্দের অতিরিক্ত ব্যবহার লক্ষণীয়। বিদেশি ভাষার চলচ্চিত্র, নাটক ও গানের প্রচারও বেড়েছে। এমনকি দেশীয় নাটক ও সংগীতেও ইংরেজি, হিন্দি বা উর্দু শব্দের ব্যবহার বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে।

শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান ও বিভিন্ন সংস্থায় ভাষা দিবস পালন করা হলেও তা অনেক ক্ষেত্রে আনুষ্ঠানিকতায় সীমাবদ্ধ। শিক্ষার্থীদের ভাষা আন্দোলনের তাৎপর্য, শুদ্ধ ভাষা চর্চার প্রয়োজনীয়তা কিংবা ভাষার প্রতি দায়িত্ববোধ সম্পর্কে যথেষ্ট সচেতন করা হয় না। বরং বাহ্যিক আয়োজনই বেশি গুরুত্ব পায়।

অন্যদিকে, আন্তর্জাতিক স্বীকৃতি পাওয়া সত্ত্বেও দেশে সর্বস্তরে বাংলা ভাষার ব্যবহার নিশ্চিত হয়নি। দোকানপাট ও প্রতিষ্ঠানের সাইনবোর্ডে ইংরেজির আধিক্য দেখা যায়, এমনকি বাংলায় লিখলেও বানানভ্রান্তি থাকে। বহু শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানের নাম ইংরেজিতে রাখা হয় এবং বাংলা ব্যবহারে অনীহা লক্ষ্য করা যায়। উচ্চশিক্ষায় বাংলায় মানসম্পন্ন পাঠ্যপুস্তক ও গবেষণাগ্রন্থের ঘাটতি রয়েছে। ফলে শিক্ষার্থীরা ইংরেজিতে দক্ষতাকেই বেশি গুরুত্ব দেয়। চাকরির ক্ষেত্রেও ইংরেজিতে পারদর্শিতাকে অগ্রাধিকার দেওয়া হয়; শুদ্ধ বাংলায় দক্ষতা মূল্যায়নের মানদণ্ড হয়ে ওঠে না।

তরুণ প্রজন্ম বাংলায় কথা বললেও শুদ্ধ উচ্চারণ ও লিখন দক্ষতার অভাব প্রকট। আঞ্চলিকতা, সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ ও বিকৃত ভাষার ব্যবহার বেড়েছে, যা অনেকেই আধুনিকতার অংশ মনে করে। সামাজিক যোগাযোগমাধ্যমে এই প্রবণতা আরও বেশি দেখা যায়। শুদ্ধ বাংলায় কথা বলাকে অনেকে অপ্রচলিত বা অস্বস্তিকর ভাবলেও এটি ভাষার মর্যাদার জন্য ক্ষতিকর।

ভাষা একটি জাতির পরিচয় ও সংস্কৃতির প্রধান বাহক। বাংলা ভাষা আমাদের ইতিহাস ও বর্তমানকে একসূত্রে গেঁথে রেখেছে। ভাষার জন্য প্রাণ দেওয়া জাতি হিসেবে আমাদের দায়িত্ব সারা বছর মাতৃভাষার যথাযথ চর্চা ও প্রয়োগ নিশ্চিত করা। ইংরেজিসহ অন্যান্য ভাষা শেখা প্রয়োজনীয় হলেও তা যেন কখনো মাতৃভাষার স্থান দখল না করে। পৃথিবীর কোনো জাতির জন্যই মাতৃভাষার বিকল্প নেই; তাই সর্বস্তরে শুদ্ধ বাংলা ব্যবহারের গুরুত্ব অনস্বীকার্য।

United International University (UIU) successfully hosted UIU HackDay 2026, the institution’s first-ever intra-university hackathon, on 8 January 2026. The high-energy, six-hour mini-hackathon aimed to foster innovation, collaboration, and practical problem-solving among students from all academic trimesters.

The event was jointly organised by the UIU Computer Club and UIU Developers Hub under the Directorate of Career Counselling and Student Affairs (DCCSA). Edusoft Consultants Limited served as the Platinum Sponsor, Future Studios Bangladesh as the Gold Sponsor, and Dacca Delights as the Cookie Partner. Prominent media partners included The Business Standard, Times UIU, and TBS Graduates as the Youth Engagement Partner.

70+ teams comprising 200+ students participated, competing across three categories based on academic trimester levels:

• Category 1 (Trimester 1–4): Best Idea & Best Execution

• Category 2 (Trimester 5–8): Best Idea & Best UI/UX

• Category 3 (Trimester 9–12+): Best Product Potential & Best Code Quality

Prior to the main event, organisers conducted three pre-hackathon workshops to prepare participants. Categories 1 and 2 attended offline workshops at the UIU Innovation Hub on 6 December 2025 and 14 December 2025, led by Fatin Shadab Turja, Open-source Python Developer and YouTube Instructor at Phitron, and Md Sifat Bin Jibon, Blockchain Developer at R3cev LLC. Category 3 participated in an online workshop on 5 January 2026, led by Md Sifat Bin Jibon and Sifat Ali, Full-stack Engineer and AI/ML & Bioinformatics Developer.

UIU HackDay 2026 was judged by a panel of academic and industry experts, including:

In Category 3, Team Absolute Protein Powder, comprising Mizi Mohammed Masum, Fardeen Jahangir, and Zarif Ahmed, won the “Best Product Potential” award for their project “Us”, an AI-powered, gamified couples’ conflict resolution app praised for its practical relevance, innovation, and scalability.

Meanwhile, in Category 1, Team KALA BHUNA, represented by Mainul Islam and Yousha Nayeef, secured the Best Execution award, showcasing exceptional implementation skills and creativity.

With a prize pool of 30,000 BDT, the event marked a celebration of student talent, technical proficiency, and entrepreneurial mindset, reinforcing UIU’s commitment to hands-on learning, collaboration, and innovation. HackDay 2026 set a new benchmark for student-led technology events, inspiring future innovators to transform ideas into impact.

The transfer of power to leaders chosen by the people after many years is a positive sign for the country. However, Bangladesh has faced many difficulties in building a strong and fair democratic system.

As a first-time voter in the 13th National Parliamentary Election, I feel proud to take part in this new democratic journey. I was not a voter during the 2009 parliamentary election, which was held with all major political parties taking part and without major controversy. At that time, the election environment was different. Candidates went door to door asking for votes, and there was excitement in both villages and cities. People discussed politics in tea stalls, children shouted party slogans while playing, and families went together to vote. Many stayed awake at night waiting for the results. Elections felt like a festival. In the next three elections, that excitement and public involvement were mostly missing. After nearly 16 years, this election marks a new beginning for democracy in Bangladesh.

Even so, the country has faced problems such as political blame games, a lack of trust between parties, arguments over the election-time government system, questions about administrative fairness, and strong political division. These issues have weakened democracy. Political violence, cases and attacks against opponents, disappearances, killings, and limits on freedom of speech have also reduced public trust.

Bangladesh has a past history of violence after elections, and although only a few incidents happened this time, steps must be taken to stop such events in the future. Political leaders should clearly stand against violence, law enforcement should act fairly and firmly, and strong action is needed to stop rumours and false information on social media. Political parties also need to build understanding and cooperation.

As the new government, BNP will face many challenges. The biggest challenge will be balancing what people expect with what is realistically possible. The first priority should be improving law and order. The government must also take clear steps to control inflation, create jobs, strengthen foreign currency reserves, and improve the investment climate. At the same time, it must maintain good relations with neighbouring countries and rebuild trust with global partners.
