Tahmina Foyez, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacy at United International University, has been awarded the prestigious Early Career Fellowship by the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) for her exceptional achievements in international research.
The OWSD Early Career Fellowship is a globally competitive program designed to empower emerging women scientists from developing countries. Sponsored by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the fellowship supports recipients in advancing their research capabilities, building global scientific networks, and fostering leadership in science.
Tahmina Foyez is among only 15 women scientists from Bangladesh selected for the 2024 fellowship, reflecting her significant contributions to pharmaceutical research and her potential as a scientific leader. She earned her PhD from Japan’s renowned Nagoya University, where she conducted advanced research in pharmaceutical sciences.
As part of the fellowship, she participated in a four-day orientation workshop held recently in Trieste, Italy. The workshop brought together outstanding women researchers from across the globe to engage in knowledge exchange, develop collaborative research strategies, and explore how science can drive social change.
“The OWSD fellowship is not only a personal achievement, but also a platform to elevate the standard of research in Bangladesh and contribute to global scientific dialogue,” said Tahmina Foyez.

পড়াশোনার ফাঁকে শেরেবাংলা নগরের টং দোকানে তুমুল আড্ডা দিতেন কয়েকজন বন্ধু। চায়ের কাপে চলত নানা আলোচনা। হঠাৎ করেই এক বন্ধুর আত্মীয়ের মাধ্যমে প্রস্তাব আসে ঠিকাদারি ব্যবসার।
১৯৭৮ সালে ট্রেডিং করপোরেশন অব বাংলাদেশের (টিসিবি) আমদানি করা পণ্য খালাসের কাজের সুযোগ পায় তাঁরা। তরুণ বয়সের সাহস আর আত্মবিশ্বাস নিয়ে কোনো দ্বিধা ছাড়াই রাজি হয়ে যান। কিন্তু চ্যালেঞ্জ আসে মূলধন জোগাড়ের ক্ষেত্রে। চার বন্ধু তখন ধারের টাকায় ব্যবসা শুরু করেন।

In a moment of pride and celebration for United International University (UIU), Prof. Dr. M. Rezwan Khan, a distinguished academic and former Vice-Chancellor of the institution, has been appointed Chairman of Power Grid PLC of Bangladesh.
Currently serving as Professor Emeritus of the Department of EEE and Director of the Institute for Advanced Research (IAR) at UIU, Dr. Rezwan Khan brings decades of experience in academia, research, and leadership to his new role. With a profound understanding of electrical engineering and renewable energy systems, he has long been respected in Bangladesh's education and energy sectors.
Dr. Rezwan Khan’s appointment is a step towards strengthening the nation’s power infrastructure and promoting sustainable growth. His visionary leadership and expertise are expected to guide Power Grid PLC in ensuring more efficient energy transmission and improving the power sector's operational performance.

The “Chain Reaction” team from United International University (UIU) has claimed the Gold Award at the 5th Blockchain Olympiad Bangladesh (BCOLBD) 2024. The final round of the competition took place online on September 10, 2024. Over 200 teams from 120 universities initially entered the competition, which began on June 7, 2024. After a tough preliminary round, only 30 teams advanced to the final stage, held from September 3 to 4.
UIU’s Team Chain Reaction, led by Abu Saleh and comprising members Ahmed Shabab Noor, Samrin Silviya, Enan Israq, and F Z Shaoni Shwastika, took home the prestigious Prof. Jamilur Reza Choudhury Championship Award. The team's diverse skills contributed to their success, with Enan excelling in public speaking and Shaoni developing business models and generating ideas.
Following their victory, the team will represent Bangladesh in the International Blockchain Olympiad (IBCOL) in Amsterdam, Netherlands, this November. UIU continues its winning streak in blockchain technology after securing the Gold Award at the 2023 IBCOL with Team Apocalypse.
BCOLBD is Bangladesh’s leading platform for promoting blockchain technology and innovation. The annual event is organized in collaboration with the Bangladesh ICT Division, BASIS, Bangladesh Computer Council, IBCOL, and other organizations, bringing together top academic and industry leaders as its advisory committee.
Team UIU ASTRO from United International University Clinches 11th Place Globally and 3rd in Asia in Prestigious Space Probe Competition
Team UIU ASTRO from United International University secured the 11th spot globally and emerged as the 3rd top team from Asia in their first attempt at the CanSat Competition, organized by the American Astronautical Society. Sponsored by the US Naval Research Lab and NASA, the team scored an impressive 93.13%. Among 90 registered teams, only the top 20 from the USA and the top 20 from other countries were invited. UIU ASTRO achieved success without any aerospace engineering students, surpassing many teams with aerospace expertise.
United International University (UIU)'s University Rover Challenge (URC) squad is getting ready for the championship round with their YGGDRASIL rover. The group, which consists of seven specialist sub-teams under the direction of Dr. Salekul Islam and is captained by Abid Hossain, has won tournaments before. Drawing from prior experiences, they have made substantial changes to their rover and are employing a variety of strategies to guarantee that its quality is up to par with international standards. The team is committed to succeeding even in the face of difficulties with competitiveness and logistics. They are motivated to succeed in this year's URC by UIU's prior accomplishments and NASA recognition, and they are more excited than anxious about the competition.
Students from Batches 1 and 2 of the Department of Environment and Development Studies are on a trip to Nepal to study the environment and water management systems in various regions of the country.

These three teams are among the top 36 competition finalists.
Mongol Tori from BRAC University, Mongol Barota's PHOENIX 4.0 from MIST, and Yggdrasil from UIU have qualified for the University Rover Challenge (URC) 2024 finals. They are among the top 36 competition finalists, competing in four missions: Science Mission, Delivery Mission, Equipment Servicing Mission, and Autonomous Navigation Mission. The URC 2024 saw 102 teams from 15 countries participate, including Australia, Canada, India, Japan, the UK, and the US. URC is a popular robotics competition for university students worldwide, held annually in southern Utah, where teams engineer and construct the next generation of Mars rovers.

On October 3, 2023, United International University Civil Department organized a seminar at UIU led by Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam. He talked about marking the city's rivers and canals correctly to stop flooding. He also spoke about removing illegal constructions and mentioned worries about the Gabtali canal. The seminar shed light on critical issues related to our city's water management.
For the first time in Bangladesh, UIU is starting Undergraduate program in Data Science, Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Classes will start from Fall,2023.
